Parents and Guardians,

In an effort to keep our students informed about the latest adjustments being made by District 13 as referenced in Dr. Bartelt's Letter on the District 13 website, we made the following announcement to our students this morning:

Good morning,

Students, I wanted to take a moment to update all of you on adjustments being made in District 13 in regards to the Coronavirus.  We are taking steps to protect everyone in Westfield just as people around the country are taking steps to prevent the potential spread of the virus.

At this time there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in District 13, but the district has chosen to take some precautions.

Some of the steps include cleaning all surfaces more often and limiting the amount of visitors we come in contact with each day.  We are also encouraging everyone to wash their hands often, avoid sharing food and drinks, as well as sharing other items that are unnecessary to share.

Additionally, until further notice, the district has canceled events that would have brought large numbers of outside visitors to our schools.  Some of the events affected by this include: Athletic competitions, the Honors recognition event, and field trips.

At this time, clubs and activities that include only Westfield students and staff that take place at Westfield, such as the Spring Bash, are not being canceled.

A letter will be sent out today from Dr. Bartelt explaining the procedures taken by the district and will include the words until further notice.   Essentially, for us "until further notice" may mean only until after spring break but there’s no official end date.  At this time, we are not canceling field trips that take place in April, May and June.

The DuPage County Health Department is monitoring the situation in our local area and will have further guidance in the coming days and weeks. We will continue to update all of our students, staff and parents if we have to make further adjustments to our procedures. At this time, we do not anticipate closing schools in District 13.

Our goal as Westfield staff is to always provide you with a safe and comfortable learning environment.  We need your help as well.  Let’s make sure that we all work together to keep each other safe and healthy.

As always please stay home if you’re not feeling well.  If you do not feel well while at school, please ask to see the nurse.  When sneezing or coughing, please cover your sneeze or cough with a tissue or your arm. Wash your hands thoroughly afterwards and be respectful of those surrounding you.

Working together includes treating each other with respect and kindness.  We do not tolerate any bullying or harassment at any time, including remarks made to our fellow students regarding any illnesses they might have.  Keep in mind that every single day of the school year, a student or staff member may have a cough, a cold, the flu, allergies, etc.   At no time is it acceptable to tease, harass, or be disrespectful towards a fellow student or staff member.

We understand that this can be a stressful time, so I am encouraging all of you to talk with your teachers and parents about the situation if you have any questions or concerns.  Seek out reliable sources, like staff members, parents, or the DuPage County Health Department website, and avoid passing on rumors.

I appreciate your cooperation with any of our changes.  It is unfortunate that some of you will be missing events and activities that you were looking forward to participating in or attending.   We will do our best to reschedule events if possible.

We will continue to update everyone if other changes become necessary.  Please encourage your parents to check the District 13 website for the latest announcements.

I hope all of you have a wonderful day and weekend!
