Superintendent's Report

Citizens Request to Board
A parent of a fifth grade student at Erickson addressed the Board regarding her concerns involving her child and the upcoming field trip planned to Loredo Taft. The student suffers from anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction to tree nuts. Mrs. Barranco felt the district had not appropriately taken into consideration cases such as her daughter's when planning the fifth grade trip to Loredo Taft. This is an outdoor educational facility surrounded by forest, which is operated by Northern Illinois University. Dr. Perkins assured Mrs. Barranco and the Board that this child's safety has been at the forefront of discussions held with the special education coordinator, school staff and the district's attorney.

Mrs. Barranco read to the Board a letter that she had drafted with suggestions for precautions to follow within the schools, i.e., a better awareness for staff, students and PTO, alternative for food rewards, nut-free tables at lunch, safe bussing, etc.

The Board directed Dr. Perkins to look into the inservicing that is in place for staff and the curriculum that will be followed for this field trip. Dr. Perkins will report his findings in his Thursday Letter communication to the Board.

Mrs. Giacobazzi, a parent at Westfield, addressed the Board regarding her concerns for how "ALEC 1 & 2" students are placed at the school. She raised the question as to why parents were not notified of any changes. Dr. Perkins indicated that a meeting would be held next Wednesday evening at the middle school to fully address information to ALEC parents. Dr. Litchfield asked that Dr. Perkins report back to him after the meeting with this information. Dr. Perkins welcomed Mrs. Giacobazzi and others to join him after tonight's Board of Education meeting to discuss their concerns.
