President Donald Litchfield called the regular meeting of the Board of Education of Bloomingdale Elementary District 13 to order on Monday, August 26, 2002 in the district office at 7:32 p.m.

Roll Call
Present: Mrs. Patricia Bach, Mrs. Mary Ellen Johnson, Mr. Edward Levato, Mrs. Linda Wojcicki, Dr. Donald Litchfield (Mr. Terence McKeown entered the meeting at 7:40 p.m.)

Absent: Mrs. Ruth Ann Olson-Lewyckyj

Others Present: Dr. Jerome Gordon, Dr. Janice Caruso, Miss Debbie Kadin, Mrs. Kathy Ogden

Budget Hearing
A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Wojcicki to open the budget hearing at 7:33 p.m. Voice Vote: all ayes

As no one present chose to comment on the proposed budget, a motion was made by Mrs. Johnson and seconded by Mrs. Bach to close the budget hearing at 7:34 p.m. Voice Vote: all ayes

Consent Agenda
A motion was made by Mrs. Johnson and seconded by Mrs. Bach to approve items shown in the Consent Agenda to include the Approval of Minutes from the 7-29-02 meeting; Approval of Bills in the Education Fund for $67,243.35, Operations and Maintenance Fund for $222,276.87, Transportation Fund for $11,621.75 and Payroll (8-9-02) for $274,046.01 and (8-23-02) for $268,655.61 as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-1; the Fund Balance Report as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-2; the Revenue Report as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-3, the Expenditure Report as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-4; the Activity Report as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-5; the resignations of Jennifer Sowinski, an instructional aide at DuJardin School effective 8-11-02, Kelly Fournier, an instructional aide at Erickson effective 8-13-02, Kathy Barrons, an instructional aide at Erickson effective 8-15-02, Michelle Crandall, an instructional aide at Erickson effective 8-14-02; the employment of Nicole Guerine as part-time Assistant Principal and part-time Kindergarten teacher at DuJardin effective 8-12-02 for a salary of $48,707.50,

Amy Lasser as an instructional aide at Erickson School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Crystal Mitchell as an instructional aide at Erickson School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Rebecca Bullock as an instructional aide at DuJardin School effective 8-26-02 for a salary $10.05 per hour, Valerie Necka as an instructional aide at DuJardin School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Tammy Metz as an instructional aide at Erickson School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Jon Perry as a seventh grade teacher (33%) and an instructional aide (67%) at Westfield Middle School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10,850.00 per year as a teacher and $10.05 per hour as an aide, Mary Schmit as an instructional aide at Westfield Middle School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Eve Yearsley as an instructional aide at Erickson School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Lisa Gineman as an instructional aide at Erickson School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour, Elaine Kouigas as an instructional aide at Westfield Middle School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour and Elizabeth Knutson as an instructional aide at Westfield Middle School effective 8-26-02 for a salary of $10.05 per hour.

DuJardin Construction Update
Dr. Gordon reported that he has received many positive comments from parents and staff on the addition and remodeling at DuJardin School. The new office area looks great. The old office area that has been remodeled for the new reading room and will house the new reading materials should be open at the end of next week. The base boards need to be attached, the carpet was laid today and walls were painted over the weekend. The landscaping was completed today as well.

Opening of School Schedule (F.D. 8/26/02-6)
Dr. Caruso presented the schedule for the first three institute days, August 26, 27 and 28. This year's theme, "Laughter Counts", will begin with a breakfast on August 27 at Bloomingdale Golf Club for the entire staff, a welcome and introduction of new staff. The keynote speaker will be Brad Montgomery, a magician. Dr. Caruso outlined the Staff Development plans for the year and highlighted specific inservice days. Board members were invited to attend any of the scheduled inservices.

Board Reports and Requests

FY2003 Budget Adoption (F.D. 8/26/02-7)
A motion was made by Mrs. Johnson and seconded by Mrs. Bach to adopt the FY2003 Budget as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-7.

Nays: None
Motion Carried: 6 - 0

2002-03 Meeting Schedule (F.D. 8/26/02-8)
A motion was made by Mrs. Wojcicki and seconded by Mrs. Johnson to approve the 2002-03 Meeting Schedule as shown in F.D. 8/26/02-8. Voice Vote: all ayes

DuPage West Cook Special Ed Controversy
Dr. Gordon updated the Board on a situation concerning the Hinsdale High School district that houses the DuPage West Cook hard of hearing program. District 86 recently voted to discontinue housing the program in their high school at the end of the 2002-03 year. This decision has been contested by a group of interested parents and teachers.

IASB Chicago Schools Tour
Board members were asked to let Mrs. Ogden know a.s.a.p. if they plan to attend any of the Chicago Schools Tours during the IASB Convention.

Closed Session - Interviews With Consultant Firms
A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Wojcicki to go into closed session for the purpose of interviewing consulting firms at 8:05 p.m. Voice Vote: all ayes

A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Wojcicki to return to regular session at 10:25 p.m. Voice Vote: all ayes

Superintendent Search Consultant
A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Johnson to authorize the board president to negotiate a contract with The Bicker Group to complete the superintendent search process. Voice Vote: all ayes

Adjournment

A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Wojcicki to adjourn the meeting at 10:26 p.m.

CLOSED SESSION SCHOOL BOARD MEETING

President Donald Litchfield called the closed session meeting of the Board of Education of Bloomingdale Elementary District 13 to order on Monday, August 26, 2002 in the district office at 8:07 p.m.

Roll Call
Present: Mrs. Patricia Bach, Mrs. Mary Ellen Johnson, Mr. Edward Levato, Mr. Terence McKeown, Mrs. Linda Wojcicki, Dr. Donald Litchfield

Absent: Mrs. Ruth Ann Olson-Lewyckyj

Others Present: Dr. Jerome, Dr. Janice Caruso, Dr. Robb Cooper, Dr. Carl Plank, Dr. Tom Mullins, Mr. Darryl Dick, Mr. John Cassel

The Board went into closed session for the purpose of interviewing consulting firms to aid in the search for a new superintendent.

The Board discussed the superintendent's search with Dr. Robb Cooper and interviewed Mr. Karl Plank from Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, Dr. Tom Mullins and Mr. Darryl Dick from The Bicker Group and Mr. John Cassel from IASB.

A motion was made by Mr. Levato and seconded by Mrs. Wojcicki to return to regular session at 10:25 p.m. Voice Vote: all ayes
