The Board reviewed enrollment projections through the 2007-08 school year as presented by Dr. Perkins. There was some discussion regarding the increase in the number of kindergarten students going into first grade. Dr. Perkins explained that some parents opt to send their children to full-day kindergarten programs not affiliated with the school district for day care purposes. These students are then enrolled in District 13 in grade one.
The Board reviewed a draft of the 2004-2005 Bloomingdale School District 13 calendar along with Lake Park High School’s proposed calendar. Dr. Perkins expressed concern for the need to have continuity of instruction and will propose revisions that differ from the Lake Park calendar. These changes would include the number of days off during the winter break, a possible modification of a waiver for Veteran’s Day, parent-teacher conferences being held the week of Thanksgiving, and the addition of an early release day. This will continue to be a topic of discussion when the Lake Park area superintendents meet. Dr. Perkins will make his recommendations to the Board of Education at a meeting in February. Dr. Perkins will contact Laidlaw Transportation for possible conflicts.
