Welcome to 8th grade Science!

Welcome to Mrs. Stavnem's class!

Below you will find the various topics that we will be studying throughout the year. With the incorporation of the Next Generation Science Standards, there will be no textbooks given to the students to take home, however they will be provided with multiple texts to use throughout their studies.
Body Systems
  • Structures and Processes of Multiple Systems in the Body
  •  Inheritance and Variation of Traits
Biological Evolution
  • Unity and Diversity
Motion and Stability:  Forces and Interactions
  • Newton's Three Laws of Motion
Role of Gravity in the motions within the galaxies and the solar system
Waves and their technological applications
Our lessons will follow the new Next Generation Science Standards that have been adopted by most of the United States.  Using these topics and practices will help the students better adapt to real world situations in the work force.  During our discovery of these various topics we will be identifying eight Science and Engineering Practices, they are:
1.  Asking questions and defining problems
2.  Developing and using models
3.  Planning and carrying out investigations
4.  Analyzing and interpreting data
5.  Using mathematics and computational thinking
6.  Constructing explanations and designing solutions
7.  Engaging in argument from evidence
8.  Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
Some of our exciting projects that our students will be engaged in are:
  •  Owl Pellet discovery
  •  Car Safety Lab
  •  Roller Coaster creations
  •  Passive Solar Homes
