This blog was originally started as an opportunity for students to analyze nonfiction articles and synthesize information from various sources. As time went on, we’ve progressed into using it as a place to post and listen to podcasts, and share original writing and ideas. Any opportunity for students to communicate their learning, research, and get ideas from others may be fit into our blog.
Students will read and analyze the cover stories from Time For Kids magazines (TFK’s), which are written specifically for students in 3rd and 4th grade. Then, through Internet research, students will gain more information and background on the topic of each cover story. They will be expected to be critical researchers in order to determine which sites are appropriate and reliable. Finally, students will have the opportunity to evaluate all the information they have acquired and determine the most important details to include in an informative paragraph about the topic.
Activities on this blog will also support the reading and writing skills and strategies learned and practiced in class each day. Students have been given the opportunity to research types of writing or poetry. They’ve created and shared their own.
