What is speech-language therapy?

Speech-language therapy consists of the assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders.   These include any difficulties a child may have with communication, such as difficulties understanding language or a problem with the actual production of sounds or words.

Therapy can be provided in a variety of ways.  Direct services involve pulling a student out of the classroom for individual or small group therapy sessions.  Treatment can also be provided in the classroom environment through integrated services.  Consultation involves meeting with the educational team to brainstorm strategies or discuss progress.
