Referral Process
A student can be referred for speech-language services by a parent, teacher, or the speech-language pathologist. A parent referral is needed to conduct a speech and language screening for your child unless the TAT (teacher assistance team) process is initiated. If a classroom teacher identifies speech and language difficulties, he/she may bring a child to TAT, where strengths and weaknesses are discussed.
After a screening is completed, a full speech and language evaluation can be initiated if needed. Parental consent is necessary before any testing may begin. If the child is found eligible once evaluations are complete, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) is written to address the child's needs. This plan is very specific and goals are created with each child in mind.
