What's Happening

We will begin Unit 4 book in which the theme is TREASURES. The first story is titled Mama's Birthday Present. The genre is realistic fiction. The phonics skills are the sound for long a spelled with ai, and ay and possessives. The comprehension skill is drawing conclusions and the comprehension strategy is monitor and fix up.

We took an assessment on the skills and concepts covered in Unit 9 and will begin Unit 10 titled Measurement:Area. Students will learn that area is the amount of space a shape covers. Students estimate the areas of shapes by covering the shapes with pennies. Later they use a standard unit - square inches - for area measure. They will also explore another important idea about area: that different shapes can have the same area.

.Mr. Nussbaum and pbskids.org are also great web sites to reinforce all curricular skills and can be found on the Erickson OWL web page grade 1.
We will continue our study of plants and animals. Students will find that all things can be classified as living or nonliving things. Living things such as animals and plants have characteristics that help us group them. Animals and plants produce offspring similar to themselves.
In Social Studies we will begin Unit 2 titled Where We Live. Students will learn what geography is. The following objectives will be taught:
- exploring different types of communities
- identify and locate the location of places on maps
- identify physical characteristics of continents and oceans
- learn how to read and make a map key
- identify natural resources in the nation
- Read together for 5-10 minutes every day.
- Talk with your child about the school day.
- Go over papers that come home.
- Complete any assigned work.
- Practice word wall words and spelling words.
