LITERACY: Reading/Language Arts/Spelling/Writing Outline 4 - Unit 4-Treaasures---Hyperlink/Click Week 1 At the completion of this unit, as all units, we will take a Benchmark Test, along with and Word Wall Word Test and weekly Selection Test. TARGET SKILLS OF THE WEEK: Concept Question: How can a surprise be a treasure? Story: Mama's Birthday Present Genre: Realistic Fiction Comprehension Skill: Monitor and Fix-Up Strategy: Draw Conclusions High Frequency Words: about, enjoy, give, surprise, worry, would Vocabulary: (AMAZING WORDS)--celebrate, cherish, grateful, delicate, rarest, genuine, loot Spelling: (Long a: ai, ay)---train, way, tail, play, day, may, rain, gray, mail, afraid, about, would Bonus: about, enjoy, give, surprise, worry, would Homework: Read together 5-10 minutes every night. Parents can ask comprehension questions to check for meaning. Review Spelling words and High Frequency words as needed. Discuss any paperwork coming home. Update: At the beginning of the year your children are given the ISEL test to determine their reading skills and group. As the year progresses, other tests will be given as a measure of growth. We have also given the MAP test. This test will be given in the fall, winter and spring. All data will be saved for future reference. Please make sure that your children know all of their letter sounds. Jolly Phonics Review: qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar, s, a, t, i, p, n, ck, e, h, r, m, d, ai, j, oa, ie, ee/or, z, w, ng, v, oo, oo, u, x, ch, sh, th, qu, ou, oi, ue, er, ar Children should have mastery on those sounds. If your child is still having trouble with these sounds, check out the OWL page. There is a link to a game to help. Children are now being monitored in Fluency. We would like students to be able to read 50 wpm with an accuracy rate of 90%. By the year's end; 63 wpm/95% accuracy. |
