| Welcome to 6th grade at Westfield Middle School. This is an exciting
time, but can be a bit of a challenging transition. New building, new
friends, new classes and new teachers: it can be overwhelming, but the
teachers are here to help each student succeed.
Academic Grades
- Daily work, quizzes, tests, and projects are averaged for a final
grade each quarter.
- At the end of the fourth week of each grading period, progress reports
will be mailed home to all students. Please use Power School to check
your child’s grades and assignments throughout the year. Grades
are fully updated at mid-quarter and the quarter’s end.
- If an assignment is not completed on time, students will receive
a red “Late Work” stamp in the planbook. Parents are then
required to sign/initial the planbook for any late or missing work.
Homework Policy
Corrections for Math Classes Only
- As instructed by the teacher, daily work that falls below 70% requires
a parent signature. Work that has been accurately corrected and returned
on the following day only, will be changed to a grade of 70%. Students
are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity.
- Tests: Students may request to retake tests and quizzes that fall
below 70%. Retakes are at the discretion of the teacher. The higher
of the two scores will be recorded, but cannot exceed 70%.
- Projects: A teacher may request a project to be revised.
Absent Work
When returning to school after an absence, it is the student’s
responsibility to see the teacher at a convenient time to discuss missed
work. Students will receive one day for each day absent to turn in work
without penalty. Long-term projects may be exempt from this policy.
Student Planbook
The school district provides each child with a student planbook.
If the student loses the planbook, another copy must be purchased in the
office. (Approximately $6) The planbook is a tool for daily organization
of academic and nonacademic responsibilities. The student is expected
to accurately complete his or her planbook, by copying each classroom’s
plan board, and bring it home each day. We encourage all parents to routinely
monitor their child’s planbook to reinforce its use. Checking your
child’s planbook each night plays an important role in his or her
success. A stamp in the content area will note late or missing work, as
well as being unprepared, for that day.
