Staff Technology Competencies

Computer Operation Skills
Staff members will use computer systems to run software; to access, generate and manipulate data; and present results. They will also evaluate performance of hardware and software components and apply basic troubleshooting strategies as needed.

  1. Use correct terminology related to computers and technology in oral and written communications.
  2. Start up and shut down computer system and peripherals.
  3. Log in and out using assigned user ID.
  4. Use a secure password.
  5. Access programs from the network, disks, and CDs.
  6. Navigate within the Windows format: e.g. use icons, windows, menus.
  7. Access an application and create a document.
  8. Name, save, retrieve, revise a document.
  9. Save to and retrieve files from various locations: A and H drives, CDs.
  10. Format and name/rename a floppy disk.
  11. Copy a document from hard disk to floppy disk and vice versa; to and from CDs.
  12. Create and name/rename folders.
  13. Save, open, place documents inside folders.
  14. Perform basic housekeeping of files: e.g. rename, delete.
  15. Open and work with more than one application at a time; transfer data between applications.
  16. Use printing options: e.g. select network printers, properties.
  17. Insert and eject a floppy disk and CD.
  18. Handle properly floppy disks and CDs.
  19. Make backup copies of documents.
  20. Use self-help resources to diagnose and correct common hardware and printing problems.
  21. Perform routine printer maintenance: change cartridges, jams, clear cues, load paper.
  22. Operate peripheral devices with computer systems and software: e.g. scanners, digital cameras, LCD panels, and LCD projectors.
  23. Use a virus scan to protect the network and computer system.
  24. Participate in in-service programs to enhance operational skills.

Application of Technology in Instruction
Staff members will plan and deliver instructional units that integrate a variety of software applications and learning tools to enhance engaged learning by students. They will select and create technology-assisted learning experiences that are appropriate for curriculum goals, relevant to learners, and based upon principles of effective teaching and learning.

  1. Identify and communicate current instructional principles, research and assessment practices related to the use of computers and technology in the curriculum.
  2. Identify, evaluate, and recommend available computer and technology resources including application programs, tools, educational software, and related documentation.
  3. Use technology appropriate to the discipline/subject for learning and as a medium for communication.
  4. Use the District 13 Technology Curriculum to identify what students should know and be able to do.
  5. Plan and deliver appropriate activities that will allow students to meet the specified District technology goals.
  6. Develop, deliver, and assess student learning activities that integrate computers and technology into a variety of teaching strategies including engaged learning and curriculum integration.
    1. Develop and use strategies for teaching students the concepts and skills needed to apply productivity tools.
    2. Develop and deliver performance tasks that require students to use technology to locate, analyze, and organize information from a variety of research vehicles.
    3. Develop and deliver strategies for teaching students problem-solving principles and skills using technology resources.
    4. Develop and deliver integrated technology classroom activities that involve teaming and/or small group instruction of students.
    5. Develop and use a set of evaluation strategies and methods that will assess the effectiveness of instructional units that integrate computers and technology.
  7. Provide opportunities for students to plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate multimedia presentations and reports: e.g. Power Point, LCD projectors.
  8. Identify, evaluate, and use telecommunications tools and resources for information access and retrieval: e.g. Internet sites.
  9. Acquire the skills necessary to create material appropriate for posting on a Web page: e.g. curriculum reports, student projects.
  10. Model responsible, ethical and legal use of technology, information, and software resources.
  11. Participate in in-service programs to enhance instructional and integration skills.

Professional Use of Technology
Staff members will apply the tools of technology to enhance their own professional growth and productivity. They will use computer and other technology devices to prepare instructional activities for the classroom and collect data for evaluation of student learning. They will communicate electronically with other persons.

  1. Use an electronic grade book.
  2. Use word processing programs to create, edit, and print documents (Microsoft Word).
    1. Create a finished document for a specific purpose.
    2. Enter, save, and retrieve text.
    3. Perform basic edit processes: e.g. highlight, cut, copy, paste.
    4. Copy and move blocks of text.
    5. Change text format and style; set margins, line spacing, tabs, and page breaks.
    6. Check spelling, grammar, word usage.
    7. Create a header or footer.
    8. Insert date, time, page number.
    9. Insert clip art into a document.
    10. Insert images created by a different source: e.g. a drawing or paint program, scanner, digital camera, Internet.
  3. Use desktop publishing programs to create, edit, and print documents (Microsoft Publisher).
    1. Create a finished document for a specific purpose.
    2. Enter, save, and retrieve text.
    3. Perform basic edit processes: e.g. highlight, cut, copy, paste.
    4. Copy and move blocks of text.
    5. Change text format and style; set margins, line spacing, tabs, and additional pages.
    6. Check spelling, grammar, word usage.
    7. Create a header or footer.
    8. Insert date, time, page number.
    9. Insert clip art into a document.
    10. Insert images created by a different source: e.g. a drawing or paint program, scanner, digital camera, Internet.
  4. Use presentation software to prepare instructional lessons and reports (Microsoft PowerPoint).
    1. Use a multimedia program to create electronic slides.
    2. Integrate graphics and the Internet into a multimedia presentation.
    3. Input sound into a multimedia presentation.
    4. Use a variety of transitions and builds.
  5. Use database programs to complete professional tasks (Microsoft Access).
    1. Use information from an existing database.
    2. Sort a database by specific fields, add and delete records.
    3. Create a database with multiple fields and records.
    4. Merge database information into word processing documents.
    5. Use correctly terms such as database, field, record, layout, sort/arrange, search/select/filter.
  6. Use spreadsheet programs to complete professional tasks (Microsoft Excel).
    1. Interpret and communicate information in an existing spreadsheet.
    2. Enter data in an existing spreadsheet.
    3. Create a spreadsheet with rows, columns, headings.
    4. Create/copy formulas and functions to perform calculations.
    5. Create a graph from spreadsheet data.
    6. Insert a spreadsheet or graph into a word processing document.
    7. Use correctly terms such as spreadsheet, cell, data entry bar, formula, function.
  7. Use the Internet as a professional resource.
    1. Connect to the Internet or an on-line service.
    2. Access and use resources on the Internet and World Wide Web.
    3. Use search engines to perform simple and complex searches.
    4. Navigate within the Web browser: e.g. back, forward, home, stop, refresh.
    5. Use bookmarks.
  8. Use e-mail to correspond with colleagues and parents.
    1. Compose, send, retrieve, and read e-mail messages.
    2. Reply to e-mail messages.
    3. Use attachments to e-mail messages.
    4. Create folders; save messages to folders.
    5. Create and use single and group address lists.
  9. Participate in in-service programs to enhance professional use of technology.
