Using a Scanner

Creating a File

  1. To start up the PrecisionScan software, press the green button on the front of the scanner. The PrecisionScan startup screen should appear. OR, you can start PrecisionScan as a regular program from the Windows Start menu.
  2. In the HP PrecisionScan software Main dialog box, select Image File as the destination in the Scan To dropdown list. This will create a file which can be saved to a disk or your "H" drive and can be inserted in your booklet.
  3. If you want to be able to preview the image before scanning, select the Select parts of page or View page first checkbox. If any of the images you want are in color, select the Scan in Color checkbox.
  4. Place the original you want to scan on the scanner, lining it up to the upper right corner. Click Scan.

Scanning Basics

  1. Each unique area of the page will be recognized and marked with a blue border (the border is visible only on that screen and not in the image). These blue boxes are called "regions." Some regions may be text and some may be drawings or photos. If you want the whole page (all regions), hit the Accept button. If you only want to scan certain regions, click on those regions (the blue line will change to a black dotted line) before clicking on the Accept button.
  2. If you are scanning a photo and only want to scan part of it, click somewhere inside the photo region. Click inside the region again, using the right mouse button. Select Remove Single Region Boundary, which will delete the region. Then create a new region by drawing a box around the part of the photo you want scanned, using the arrow tool. Resize the box by clicking on and dragging each side of the box when the mouse cursor changes to an arrow. Click on the Accept button.
  3. After hitting the Accept button, a window will pop up in which you will choose where you want the file stored (e.g., to your "H" drive, "A" drive, etc.); the name you choose for the file; and the format the file is to be saved as. Save the photo in a JPEG format.
  4. A window will appear allowing you to adjust the Image Quality. Click OK to use the default settings.

Using the Image File

You can now insert the image file you created into a document (e.g., Word, Publisher, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, FrontPage). Open the program. Select the Insert menu, select Picture, then select From File. Find the file you created, click on the file, then on Insert. Move and resize the image as necessary.

Creating an Image to Use Directly in a Document (e.g. Word, Publisher, etc.)

Open the program. Select the Insert menu, select Picture, select From Scanner or Camera, then select Acquire Image. If you are using Word or PowerPoint, a window titled Insert Picture from Scanner or Camera will appear. The text in the Device box should read HP PrecisionScan 2.0. Click on the Custom Insert button and the startup screen for PrecisionScan should appear. In the Scan To box, you will see the name of the program you are working in. Follow the directions for scanning found in the Creating a File section of this document.
