Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Perkins reviewed the sixth day enrollment figures and how they compare
with last year’s numbers. The district has seen a 6.5% reduction in enrollment
from last year, and a 16% reduction over the last nine years. Dr. Perkins showed
board members the breakdown in class sizes from kindergarten through eighth
grade.
Board members endorsed the updated District Goals as presented by Dr.Perkins.
The three goals – Improve Student Achievement in the Area of Literacy,
Improve Communication Across the District in Areas Necessary, and Improve the
District’s Performance in Meeting the Needs of All Students, along with
their accompanying action steps, will be shared with district employees.
Dr. Schielke shared her On the Horizon Report with the Board. MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing began today at DuJardin School. Testing will begin at Erickson School on Tuesday, and Westfield next week. Dr. Schielke commented that initial student feedback was good. Results will be received when all testing is complete. Dr. Schielke distributed a brochure that was available to parents during the curriculum nights. This brochure outlined the activities the district will be involved in during the coming year, ie., MAP testing, curriculum mapping, differentiation of instruction, literacy program strategies, and school improvement goals. Jodee Blanco, author of the book, Please Stop Laughing at Me, will speak to students during assemblies at Westfield on September 25. Ms. Blanco’s book describes her own experiences of being bullied by classmates. Her words should fit in well with the new middle school discipline policy.
