President Terry McKeown called the regular meeting of the Board of Education in Bloomingdale Elementary School District to order on Monday, August 26, 2013 in the district office, 164 S. Euclid Ave., at 7:01 p.m.

Superintendent’s Report
Dr. Bartelt gave a brief summary of opening day activities which began on Monday, August 12.  Individual school faculty meetings were held, after which, staff participated in various activities in each building. On August 13, the annual welcome breakfast was held for all staff.  Dr. Bartelt and Dr. Waugh shared information regarding the overall state of the District and other relevant data.

Dr. Bartelt shared information regarding Septemberfest which is scheduled for Saturday, September 7.  The Board will again participate in the parade, which kicks off in front of DuJardin School at 11:00 a.m.

At the July Administrative Retreat, District Cabinet members worked on initiatives to support the four goals developed for the Strategic Plan.  Dr. Bartelt will share these initiatives with the Board prior to the September board meeting.

With the aid of graphs, Dr. Bartelt presented a snapshot of student academic growth during the 2012-2013 school year.

Dr. Waugh shared her professional development calendar which provided a recap of summer workshops held that included Common Core Writing and Math, and UbD Common Core Curriculum Development.  A new teacher orientation was held on August 5 where new staff were welcomed with a continental breakfast and lunch at the district office, followed by time spent with their mentors.  On August 7, new teachers participated in Legal Lite at the DuPage Regional Office of Education at their Lombard location.  Dr. Waugh also provided the testing schedule for 2013-2014.

Mr. Dwyer reported on the TenMarks program.  The TenMarks is a math-based intervention program that focuses on students with lower math propensity scores, although reading growth was also examined.  Mr. Dwyer provided a summary of the data gleaned from the program last school year which was used differently at each school.

The Board previewed the new District dashboard as shared by Dr. Bartelt and developed by ECRA.  This site provides data on student performance, District environment, finance, and resources available to the District.

Board "Salutes"
The following people received a “salute” from one or more board members and/or the superintendent/assistant superintendent for their contributions to the Bloomingdale School District 13 community:

Freedom of Information Act Request
Dr. Bartelt reported that one FOIA request had been received since the last meeting.  Jake Griffin from the Daily Herald requested 2013-2014 school registration fees.  Mr. Griffin’s request was complied to within the parameters set forth.

Access to Board Reports
As a follow-up to a previous “Topic for Future Agenda” suggestion from Mrs. Lancaster, Dr. Bartelt discussed options for Board member access to archived materials.

Board/Superintendent Expectations
The Board reviewed the School Board and Superintendent Expectations sheet as outlined last year.  No changes were made.

Other
Mrs. Birkley inquired about Board and teacher participation in the Strategic Plan implementation process.  Dr. Bartelt indicated that the District Cabinet will review the draft document first and he will forward it to board members in a future Thursday Letter for their feedback prior to the September 23 Board of Education meeting.

Board members indicated their pleasure regarding the Annual Report released earlier this month.

Closed Session
A motion was made by Mrs. Wojcicki and seconded by Mr. Moreth to enter into closed session after a brief recess at 8:15 p.m. for the purpose of discussing the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance, or dismissal of specific employees of the public body or legal counsel for the public body, including hearing testimony on a complaint lodged against an employee of the public body or against legal counsel for the public body to determine its validity. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(1); and the setting of a price for sale or lease of property owned by the District. 5 ILCS 120/2(c)(6).

The Board returned to regular session at 9:20 p.m.

Approval of Extension of Retirement Date for C. Woehrle (F.D. 8/26/13-12)
A motion was made by Mrs. Wojcicki and seconded by Mrs. Birkley to approve C. Woehrle’s extension to her previous retirement request from end of December 2014  to June 30, 2015.

Purchase/Sale of Property
A motion was made by Mr. Moreth and seconded by Mrs. Birkley to approve the sale of 27,450 square feet of property to Marklund in the amount of $132,000.

Approval of Designation of Funds
The Board chose not to make a decision at this time regarding the designation of proceeds from the sale of the property located at the back field of DuJardin School.
